While fishing a local lake during the recent holiday weekend I noticed an osprey hunting some distance away. I readied the camera just in case something interesting happened. No sooner was I ready than the osprey began its stoop plunging into the water below.
After diving completely under water the osprey surfaced and with great difficulty tried to lift its catch into the air. The osprey continued to struggle, trying to take flight with its catch clutched in its talons, for over two minutes.
Finally it either lost its grip or decided the fish was too large to handle and flew back into the sky resuming the hunt.
Quality is less than my normal standard as these images shot with a Canon 100-400mm lens are severely cropped because of the distance involved.

California Ground Squirrel (
Spermophilus beecheyi), Yosemite National Park, 5 September 2010
Can you spot the squirrel? (hint)
prints available
September is when my Canadians come to visit. I expect to see them in about a week. I refer to them as "mine" because they always stop and spend time on my beach. A small wetland across the road drains into the bay and they stop here for a drink of fresh water.
Canada Geese (
Branta canadensis) are year-around residents here according to
Birdweb, but I only see them in September. This tells me these birds are on migration, snowbirds heading for winter homes in California and Mexico.
After getting a drink, they will sometimes sleep in the sun with heads tucked under wings. This is a pleasant site, and I am glad they feel comfortable here. I have been observing their annual arrivals for more than twenty years. They are so predictable, their visits can be used to set the cosmic clock.
For those of you whom live on this side of the big pond and know of these areas, and can give me some interesting tidbits, would appreciate. My husby, our 2 1/2 year old Meaka pupcub and I shall be taking a two week journey soon. We plan to travel thru Iown up into South Dakota and then north to Bismark, North Dakota. Then it is back down into South Dakota, the Badlands, and Custer National Park, down through Wyoming and into Colorado. If you know of any special nature and scenic type things to see along this journey, that might not be as big as a national, or state park and would otherwise be missed, by all means let me know about it. The images that follow were taken in our creek as a frog made air bubbles and ripples were formed, kind of a creative touch made by nature~
